Bridgestone is an automobile accessories and spare parts manufacturing company known for its world class tires. The company's name was given in accordance with the calque translation and transposition of ishibashi, which means 'stone bridge' in Japanese. The company came into existence in the year 1931 in city of Kurume, Japan and was founded by Shojiro Ishibashi. But it made its first tire before the establishment of the company in the year 1930 under the Japanese "Tabi" socks tyre division. In the year 1951 the company started selling rayon cord tires and became the first company in Japan to do so. By the 1960's the company expanded to outside Japan to other countries of the world and opened its first international manufacturing facility in Singapore in the 1965. In the year 1988 the company bought another tire manufacturing company named 'Firestone Tire and Rubber Company' to order to expand its business. The company owns 47 tire plants, 29 tire-related plants, 89 diversified product plants, 19 raw materials plants, 11 proving grounds and 4 technical centers all over the world as of April, 2011. During the 1980s the company provided tires to the Le Mans sport prototypes of teams Nismo and TOM's. Presently Bridgestone is the official supplier of tires and other automobile accessories to many motor-racing events like Formula One.
