History
Canara Bank was founded on 1st of July 1906 as Canara Hindu Permanent Fund in Mangalore by Ammembal Subba Rao Pai. After four years in 1910, bank changes name to Canara Bank
Limited in 1910. In 1961, Canara Bank acquired Bank of Kerala, which having
Three branches at the time of acquisition. In the same year, they acquired Trivandrum Permanent Bank with fourteen branches. In the year of 1963, Canara Bank acquired four Banks named as the Sree Poornathrayeesa Vilasam Bank, Thrippunithura, Arnad Bank, Tiruchirapalli, Pandyan Bank, Madurai and Cochin Commercial Bank, Cochin. Canara Bank was nationalised by the Government of India along with 13 other major commercial banks on 19th of July, 1969. Lakshmi Commercial Bank was acquired by Canara Bank in 1985, which brought Canara Bank 230 branches in Northern India.
