Employees’ State Insurance Corporation is an self-governing corporation which is under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India for the benefit of the worker class. It provides Health Insurance Scheme for the workers. The ESI Act 1948, was launched by the Parliament in order to provide social security to the workers and it incorporates health related contingencies faced by the workers like sickness, death due to employment injury, temporary or permanent disability, occupational disease, maternity etc. The scheme started on 24th Feb’1952 in Kanpur (ESIC Day) by Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, who was the first insured person of the scheme and was simultaneously started in Delhi. It can also raise loans and set up hospitals either in Alliance with state government and private entities or independently. The scheme is implemented in various states and union territories. The Central headquarters of Esic is at New Delhi, and it has a huge network of fifty two Regional, Sub-Regional and Divisional offices in various states. It has also under taken administration of twenty three Esi Model Hospitals in various states. The regional office of ESIC in Gujarat is located in Ahmedabad with fourteen branch offices and more than forty dispensaries in Ahmedabad. There are three ESIC Hospitals in Ahmedabad. The corporation not only has dispensaries and hospitals but also runs Occupational Disease Centres and ESIC Medical Educational Institutes.
