Facebook is the social networking website based in Menlo Park, California, USA. It is the brainchild of Mark Zukerberg, who launched it in 2004. Facebook is one of the largest social networking websites and has over 1.28 billion users worldwide. It is the multilingual website available in 70 languages. Facebook is listed on Nasdaq and has over 6,818 employees. It also owned other social networking services such as Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus VR.
The story of Facebook was begun in 2003, when Mark Zuckerberg, a student of Harvard University developed Facemash, which was used to share ID photos of the students stored in the Harvard University's data base. To execute his process, Zuckerberg hacked the database of the Harvard University. The visitors would rate on that sharing photos by “Hot or NoT”. Soon Facemash shot into popularity though it was closed by Harvard authority. After facing expulsion and charges for security breach of the university, Zuxkerber came up with his new project in 2004 known as “Thefacebook”. It was started as an interacting medium for the students of the Harvard University and later on opened for other colleges. Mark Zuckerberg was assisted by his fellow mates Andrew McCollum, Chris Hughes, Eduardo Saverin and Dustin Moskovitz in the development of Thefacebook. After shifting its office to Palo Alto, California in 2004, Thefacebook was renamed as Facebook with acquiring the domain as facebook.com in 2005. In 2006, Facebook begun to accept everyone's member request and had the listings of 100,000 business pages by 2007. It was the third largest online company in the USA and valued at $41 billion in 2010. In the same year, it has surpassed Google in terms of visitors while in 2011, nearly 20,000 profile has been created at the Facebook. The company went public in 2012 and received the valuation of $104 billion. It was the constituent of Fortune 500 list in 2012.
Apart from being in USA and Canada, Facebook's offices are located in the other parts of the world. It operates in Ireland as Facebook Ireland Limited while its registered in India is as “Facebook India Online Services Pvt Ltd.” The other offices are located in Argentina, Amsterdam, Belgium, London, Tokyo, Stockholm, Madrid etc.
The user must be of thirteen years or above to create profile on Facebook. Some of the basic features of Facebook for its users are upload photos, send friend requests, post information, like and unlike buttons, comments on photos and views, message, chat, receive notifications etc. In 2011, Facebook introduced a new option for the users, Timeline which gives new appearance to the profile and organize photos and posts according to the year. Like button is one of its popular features to give positive response to the photos, comments, pages created by other users. Notifications are the types of alerts and updates. A users can receive upto 99 notifications. It also allows users to create networks, groups and pages. News Feed is one of the important components of its structure as it shares the information about the activities of user.
Facebook also features several apps on profile page such as events, which is used to inform the persons in the friend list about events, gathering and parties. The Marketplace is the classified and advertisement application while the user can insert his tags, images, full length text etc. through Facebook Notes. “Places” allows the users to share his or her location with the friends. Facebook Platform is designed for the third party developers to introduce their own apps and web services to be distributed through Facebook. User can upload video on Facebook, which supports the video formats upto 1080p and 4k. Facebook also developed Facebook Paper app for Iphone which gives a platform to share photos and stories in a presentation way. Its other features are Facebook Credits, Facebook Graph Search, Listen with Friends, Facebook Live, Mood faces, Poke etc.
