The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Inc. or FINRA is a statutory non-governmental organization that offers registration, market surveillance & analysis and implementation services for firms & industries that invests in the security or share market of the United States. The body is regulated and managed by the Securities and Exchange Commission. FINRA was incorporated 30th July, 2007 by the merger of the operations between the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. (NASD) and New York Stock Exchange. It operates more than 15 branch offices across the nation including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Woodbridge, Dallas and Chicago with approximately 4,000 employees. The headquarters of the organization is situated in Washington DC, United States.
FINRA Functions
FINRA governs the business of share market such as New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, American Stock Exchange and International Securities Exchange and ensures the dealers, brokers, investors and companies with the protection policy. More than 4,000 brokerage firms, 630,000 investors and approximately 165,000 offices are registered with the organization. The organization provided licensing service to the industries and firms that want to take part in the investment business by framing rules and regulation of operation. FINRA solves the disputes between companies, public and brokers and also imposes fine to the guilty person or firm as compensation. In 2013, it arbitrates more than 1,300 cases between brokers and firms.
