History
The airport was initially established on May 1, 1929 as Merle Fogg Airport on an uninhibited 9-hole golf course. Following the closure of Naval Air Station (NAS) Fort Lauderdale on October 1, 1946 it was re-established as Broward County International Airport and commenced operations on June 2, 1953 by providing Commercial flights to Nassau, Bahamas.
