History
The Garmin Ltd was setup in 1983 by Gary Burrell. While working for the previous King Radio, Gary Burrell hired Min H. Kao from defence ex-servicemen Magnavox. Together they founded Garmin in 1989 in Lenexa, Kansas, as ProNav. ProNav was introduced with the first GPS unit which cost $2,500 USD. Later, it was renamed to Garmin; name was contrived from partner’s first name. In 1991, it got the U.S.
Army as the first client.
