Halifax is the UK based bank and is the subsidiary of Lloyds Banking Group. It is the erstwhile Halifax Building Society and provides financial services like savings, credit cards, loans, mortgages, insurance, investments, share dealing etc. Halifax is known as one of the largest banks in terms of mortgages and saving accounts services in the UK.
Halifax dates back to 1853 when it was founded as The Halifax Permanent Benefit Building and Investment Society. It was named after the Halifax town, where it was established. The proposal to start a building society was put forth by founding members at the inn to provide the Benefits to the working class in the city. In its starting year, the society had the membership of over 580 people with the strength of 144 depositors. Its branches were begun at Thornton, Queenshead followed by the first at Sowerby Bridge. Its head office was relocated to Princess Street from Crossley Street.
Having elected Enoch Hill as its Secretary in 1903, the building society was expanded rapidly and by 1913, it was the world's largest building society. In 1924, it has covered London and outstretched to Scotland in 1928. It was renamed as Halifax Building Society following a merger with Halifax Equitable Building Society. The merger also helped the society to receive five times more expansion than its competitors.
In 1960's, Halifax switched on to the computerization of its banking operations. In 1973, its new head office was opened at Trinity Road, Halifax which was used in its products. With the passing of Building Societies Act of 1986, Halifax was free to carry its operations with independence. It began offering credit cards and current accounts facilities. In 1995-96, Halifax was merged with Leeds Permanent Building Society followed by the acquisition of Clerical Medical.
Halifax was incorporated as public Limited company and started trading on LSE in 1997. It begun to deliver its Internet and telephone services in 2000. In 2001, Halifax was merged with Bank of Scotland to create HBOS, Halifax Bank of Scotland. In 2009, HBOS was purchased by Lloyds Banking Group.
