Institute of Company secretaries of India was established on 1st January, 1981. It was formed under the Act of Parliament (Company Secretary Act No. 56 of 1980). It is responsible for certifying the candidates qualifying for the membership of the institute as it is the only recognized professional body in the country responsible for regulating and developing the profession of Company Secretary (CS). It also provides coaching and training to students to qualify as CS. Its Head Office is located at New Delhi with four regional offices which are at New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai. Under the jurisdiction of four regional councils are sixty nine chapters which also includes one international chapter at Dubai. Their chapter at Ahmedabad is located at Chinubhai Tower, Ashram Road, Ahmedabad. Its membership is mandatory for employment under the Central Government for superior posts and services. Its managed by a council which includes fifteen elected members and five nominees of the Central Government, the President of the council being the chief executive authority. The main important role of CS as a professional is in assisting effectual management of the corporate sector. The course offered has four stages in chronological order which include Foundation programme, Executive programme, Professional programme and Training. It has entered into MOUs with various national and state level chambers of commerce, management institutes etc.
