National Zoo Washington Dc is Associated With and Known as:

The National Zoological Park, popularly known as National Zoo located in Washington, D.C, United States ; serving as one of oldest zoos is considered as the major recreation center in the United States. The National Zoo was established under the Act passed by the Congress in 1889. The Zoo was designed by a group of Three people namely, Frederick Law Olmsted, William T. Hornaday and Samuel Langley. In order to provide medical care for animals, the zoo officials appointed a veterinary doctor in the 1950s. Later on, in 1975, the Zoo launched its research division called Conservation and Research Center (CRC) to pursue the study of reproduction of various animal species. The zoo is a functional unit of Smithsonian Institution since 1890. The National Zoo is home to about 2,000 animals that belong to about 4000 varied species. Some of them include amphibians, great apes, Great Cats and birds etc. Amongst them, the animals exhibited by the National Zoo are listed as Apes, Giant Panda, Nicobar Pigeons, Grey seals, Giant Pacific Octopus and many more. The National Zoo also maintains a separate breeding place for baby animals like Nigerian Dwarf, Hereford etc and is termed as the Kid's Farm. With about 2 million periodic tourists visiting at the zoo, the National Zoo serves as a major tourist attraction along with this it also aims to generate awareness towards animal conservation through its several educational courses and programs. The National Zoological Park has two divisions, out of which one is located in Front Royal, Virginia in the name of Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and the other in northwest Washington, D.C. The National Zoo has partnership with the American Public Gardens Association and Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ). The Zoo's operational network spans to countries such as Central America, Spain and China etc. Additionally, the National Zoo claims itself to be authorized and certified by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
