It is a multinational company with more than 48 manufacturing facilities in 17 countries around the world. Osram Sylvania is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Osram Licht AG. The Roots of the company date back to 1901, when Frank Poor, an American young entrepreneur joined a light bulb company in Middleton. The company would accept the old burned bulbs, replace their filaments and resell in the market. After that, Poor purchased the company and given it the name Bay State Lamp Company. The name OSRAM is derived from the names of two elements: Osmium, a metal and Wolfram, a name of tungsten in Germany. The company became the first to manufacture tungsten filament lamp and Osmium lamp. In the year 1909, the founder along with his Brother gave birth to the Hygrade Incandescent Lamp Company and began producing carbon-filament light bulbs. In 1916, the newly formed company, Hygrade established a manufacturing facility in Salem, Massachusetts, and the daily production of which reached to 16,000 lamps. The Osram GmbH's acquisition of Sylvania Electric Products gave birth to the OSRAM SYLVANIA. The head office of the company is situated in Danvers, Massachusetts.
