Sheridan College also known as Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning was founded in 1967. It has grown from a small local based college to a leading Polytechnic Institute of Canada. The college is located in Oakville, Ontario. It has two other campuses which are located in Brampton and Mississauga. The college specialises in courses related to areas of business, community services, technology, telecom, visual and performing arts and engineering.
The institute offers various courses under its 6 different faculties viz., Business, Animation Art and Design, Liberal Arts and Access, Applied Science and technology, Applied Community and Health Studies and Continuing Education and Sheridan Corporate. The courses are in range of foundation, certificate, diploma, advanced diploma, graduate, post graduate degree and collaborative degrees in partnership with University of Toronto (Mississauga), Brock University and York University. It also provides courses in professional certification and skill development for corporate.
The institute is reputed for its contribution to the animation industry, the first course in classical animation was commenced in 1968 by its first president John Morton Porter. Animation students of the college have won distinctive awards: John Minnis for best animated short film Charade in 1984 and in 2005 Sheridan's animation professor Kaj Pindal won Emmy Award for short film Peep and Big Wide World, in 2011 theater student Brittany Allen won Emmy Award for her character Marisa Chandler in All My Children . Alumni of animation faculty of the college have worked on notable Hollywood movies namely: Brave, Life of Pi, Wreck-it Ralph, Paperman, Paranorman, Marvel’s The Avengers, Frankenweenie, Snow White & The Huntsman and The Hobbit.
The college has its own three research facilities which are: Visualization Design Institute which concentrates on games, digital visualization, touch free user interface, Sheridan Elder Research Centre that works on improving the quality of life of older people and Screen Industries Research and Training Centre which is a post production and digital media with sound proof facility.
The college has its own sports teams for both men and women for volleyball, soccer and basketball. The teams are associated with Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) which governs all inter college sports in Ontario province of Canada.
