University of Guelph Athletic Centre is Associated With and Known as:
University of Guelph Athletics is the university’s athletic department. The university teams are popularly known as Guelph Gryphons. The name comes from Gryphons, an animal which represents the strength of the lion and the intelligence of the eagle. The university athletics program is sponsored by Russell Athletics and many of its programs are associated with Ontario University Athletics and Canadian Interuniversity Sport, to compete for both provincial and national championships.
The college of athletics was founded in the year 1874, although the athletics association was organised in 1892. It aims at promoting athletic sports in order to promote physical culture. It has many varsity teams, which includes baseball, basketball for Men
and women, field hockey, football, golf, cross country, Lacrosse
for men and women, rugby, soccer, volleyball hockey, etc., for both men and women, swimming, rowing, wrestling, etc. It may be that certain branches of sports have received more attention than others, but this has been Due
to some branches being more popular than others.
The department offers various fitness and recreation options, which include various fitness options, intramurals, various clubs, leagues, etc. Athletic facilities at the University of Guelph
are separated into four main branches, each Housing
a variety of facilities for various purposes or sports: W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre, Gryphon Dome, Gryphon Centre and Alumni Stadium. The athletic centre operates from Monday to Thursday- 6:30 am-12:30 am; Friday- 6:30 am-10:30 pm; Saturday-8 am-10:30 pm and on Sundays- 8 am-12:30 am.
